Duck Dynasty Takes Fire

Phil Robertson finally cut loose. In the newest issue of GQ magazine, Robertson came out and said what we’d suspected his beliefs were all along.   The star of A&E’s Duck Dynasty, cable television’s most successful show ever, Robertson has earned cult figure status for his rough appearance, conservative standards, family values and biblical faith.  Say what you will about him, the man loves Jesus and doesn’t shy away from telling you so.   So it shouldn’t have come as a surprise that in the magazine interview, Robertson spoke his mind on homosexuality. While I can’t repeat everything he said (some of his comments are too earthy for a blog […]

What I Love About Military Weddings

When my son Will and his fiancé Jessica asked me to officiate at their wedding I told them I’d be glad to but that they’d better be prepared for me to cry like a little girl.   I wasn’t joking. I’m not much of a crier (except when the Georgia Bulldogs lose), but when my kids get married, all bets are off. Will—and his sister Katie three years ago at her own wedding—knew what to expect.   As the ceremony unfolded two weeks ago, though, I handled things pretty well. The processional went smoothly as the bridesmaids took their places around the front of the church. Katie was among them, […]

Praying with Holy Confidence

Mark Batterson is challenging me to pray like I’ve never prayed before, in his book, “The Circle Maker.” Here’s what he says about praying with confidence: “With God, it’s never an issue of of ‘Can he?’ It’s only a question of ‘Will he?’ And while you don’t always know if he will, you know that he can. And because you know he can, you can pray with holy confidence.”

How to Have a Great Thanksgiving

Other than Easter, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year.   Not for the food—although I love the food more than I want to admit. Roast turkey is one of my favorite foods. Sweet potato soufflé makes my mouth water. Fresh cranberry relish is a personal addiction. And my mother-in-law always makes a special batch of gravy for me with all the innards of the turkey that no one else wants to eat. My father-in-law married well.   But lots of other holidays are known for their food. Whether Christmas cookies or the corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day or hot dogs on the Fourth of July. […]

Five Keys to Becoming a Succesful Empty Nester

Pam and I celebrate thirty-three years of marriage in two weeks. It was just us the first four years. I started my ministry as the pastor of a small country church while Pam finished up her training as a pastoral counselor. We didn’t have much—and goodness knows money was tight. But we were newlyweds and life was great.   Our first child, Katie, was born in 1984. Will followed five years later. And as couples everywhere will tell you, everything changed. From just us—with evenings spent alone and discretion to do whatever we wanted to do whenever we wanted to do it–our time, energy and resources were re-directed. Now life […]

How to find peace in a world that’s always in conflict

“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”   – Colossians 3:1-3 Our daily challenge is to deliberately keep our minds focused on the Kingdom – that’s the only way to know peace.

Homosexual Marriage, Religious Liberty and the Future of the Church

On Tuesday while Americans went to the polls in an off-year election, another political decision was made with greater long term consequences for Christians. The Illinois Legislature legalized homosexual marriage—the fifteenth state to do so. Governor Pat Quinn promised to sign the bill into law and it will take effect June 1.   Illinois’ decision is just one more step toward a national legal consensus. Sooner or later, homosexual marriage will be settled law in all fifty states. In some, legislative action will make it happen. In others, court decisions will bring about the same result. A few will turn to popular votes. Once marriage was redefined as a civil […]

How to Live a Blessed Life

I love how Psalm 37 gives us five specific invitations, so that we can live blessed lives. Trust in the Lord (verse 3) Delight yourself in the Lord (verse 4) Commit your way to the Lord (verse 5) Be still before the Lord (verse 7) Wait for the Lord (verse 34) That’s a pattern for success!
